NOLA Moms Need to Know :: New Orleans Activities in January 2019

January is here, and we’re ringing in this new year with all the fun activities happening in and around New Orleans this month!

This is in no way intended to be a comprehensive event guide {we maintain a full calendar of events right here}. We’ve pulled out a select number of events for your family to enjoy throughout the month. If you have suggestions or additions, please leave a comment!

NOLA Moms Need to Know :: New Orleans Activities in January 2019

January 5 :: Spark a curiosity for nature in your kid as they make interdisciplinary connections during January Seedlings in the Discovery Garden at Longue Vue House and Gardens. Through self-guided activities that foster experiential learning and creativity, Seedling kids engage in seed planting, art-making, insect observation, story time, and more! Play, learn, and grow as you and your Seedling explorer investigate new ideas and make new friends.

January 9 :: You are invited to come to our new “Jammy Jamboree” at the East Bank Regional Library! Come in your pajamas and cuddle with your favorite stuffed animal as you listen to bedtime stories and songs and make a fun craft! This story time is targeted for kids ages 3-5 years old. Snow is the theme for this month. We will read The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats. We will make a snowman bear ornament.

January 12 :: Join us for a fabulous garden experience! Growing Gardeners is our program for children ages six to nine who want to have some fun in our garden, and learn about—and play with—plants, food, and ecosystems! There’s so much to do in the Botanical Garden, and we would love to help your child do it all. January 20 :: The main event on Sunday for Central City Oyster Jam, a day of “Mollusks and Music”, will celebrate South Louisiana Culture with oysters as the centerpiece of that celebration brought to you at a time of year when these succulent bi-valves are at their peak for consumption! We’ll be serving them Raw, Fried, Char-Grilled, Stewed, Sautéed, Smoked, Roasted, and Paired with curated Beers, Wines, Ciders, and Champagnes!

January 21 :: In celebration of Dr. King’s life and legacy, the Ogden Museum is hosting a FREE admission day for visitors of all ages! Spend your day at the Museum exploring artists whose work investigates social justice, human rights and world peace through art activities, performances and dialogue. Community groups will also be on hand to provide resources and opportunities.

January 25 :: Ivanov’s Gymnastics is hosting our Friday Night, Fun-Night! Members and Non-members are welcome. Gymnastics, Games & Music, Pizza, Fun, Tumble-Track & Gym Play time. Register in advance at the Front desk, over the phone, or via email. Space is limited. $12.00 for members, $17.00 for non-members Ages: 4.5 and older.

January 26 :: Come try your skill, invent, and experiment in our new Lego Club at the East Bank Regional Library, targeted for ages 5 to 10. Legos will be provided for you so you don’t need to bring Legos from home. Younger siblings are welcome. Large Legos will be provided for younger siblings.

January 26 :: Through highly interactive experiences powered by STEM and the arts – and a nurturing community diverse by design – we develop tomorrow’s brightest independent thinkers, innovators, and community builders. Come see just what being an Ursuline girl is all about! Join us for STEAM Saturday – a fun morning of science, technology, engineering, art, and math!

January 26 :: Open your toddler’s eyes to the wonders of the natural world though tactile & positive learning experiences for January Sprouts at Longue Vue House and Gardens. Unwind and grow as you and your little Sprout investigate plants, animals, crafts, stories, and songs that foster holistic early childhood development!

January 26 :: Come study cells at Cabrini! Learn about the parts of the cell and types of cells through diagrams, songs, models and the creation of cell soap models at Super Science Saturday’s Science “Cell-A-Bration.” Super Science Saturday sessions are held at Cabrini High School from 9:00am to 11:30am for girls in grades 4-6. Advance registration is required. The cost to participate is $10 per session.

January 27 :: Ochsner presents the 6th Annual King Cake Festival – a celebration benefiting babies and children at Ochsner! Held in Champions Square, join us to taste king cakes from the finest bakeries, enjoy live music and support pediatric programs!

January 27 :: Join us for It’s Carnival Time: A Family Concert, as we dive into Mardi Gras with Saint-Saens’ classic Carnival of the Animalswith a New Orleans twist. Be sure to arrive 45 minutes prior to the concert to interact with musicians and their instruments.

Mondays :: Stroller Strides is a total fitness program that moms can do with their babies. It includes strolling around the park, resistance band workouts, and lots of fun for our stroller babes. Meet us in Palmer Park every Monday. Your first class is free!

Tuesdays :: Join us at the East Bank Regional Library for Read & Sing Story Time! It  includes stories, songs, and finger plays for infants and toddlers.

Wednesdays :: Afternoon Story Time with Craft at the Old Metairie Library includes stories and activities for children up to 7 years old. Large groups please call 504-838-4353 for an appointment.

Wednesdays :: “Wiggles & Giggles” Storytime with Craft at the North Kenner Library includes stories and activities for children ages 2-5 years old.

Wednesdays :: Stroller Strides is a total fitness program that moms can do with their babies. It includes strolling around the park, resistance band workouts, and lots of fun for our stroller babes. Meet us at Newman Bandstand in Audubon Park every Wednesday.

Thursdays :: Read and Sing Story Time at the River Ridge Library includes stories, songs, and finger plays for infants and toddlers up to 2 years old.

Fridays :: Stroller Strides is a total fitness program that moms can do with their babies. It includes strolling around the park, resistance band workouts, and lots of fun for our stroller babes. Meet us in Lawrence Square every Friday. Your first class is free!

Saturdays :: Join us on Saturdays for our kids art workshop at Mix It Up Art Studio. Our fun guided kids workshops are geared towards helping with your child’s creativitiy. Although the children will all be painting from the same starting point, children are welcome to customize their own piece with their favorite colors so everyone’s painting is unique. Each workshop includes a 12×12″ canvas, all supplies and materials. 

If you haven’t yet, be sure to join our Neighborhood Community Groups as we’re always planning events in areas across New Orleans!
