Tasty and Unique: Hippie Kitchen Has Something for Everyone

If you’re traveling down Jefferson Highway, between Causeway and Clearview, and you find your eyes being drawn to a stunning, vibrant mural on the side of a building, then you have found Hippie Kitchen. The first thing you notice when you walk in Hippie Kitchen is the amazing artwork that lines the walls, covering nearly every available inch with colorful and unique paintings. The artwork itself is something to stop and soak up! If they take their food nearly as serious as their art, then you know you are in for a treat! The only thing more enticing than the artwork when you walk in, is the cookie bar. Not one, not two, but numerous platters of homemade cookies and cakes line the bar. It’s a wonder you can make it to the table without stopping to order dessert first!

The staff was so friendly and kind! They welcomed my family of five with big smiles and explained the menu items with great detail. They really know the food they are serving which matters at a restaurant like Hippie Kitchen. It matters because they are not serving up a bunch of processed, chain-inspired, copycat meals. Those hippies in the kitchen are creating delicious culinary masterpieces, made from scratch with the freshest, local, and even Hippie Kitchen – grown ingredients. To leave dinner knowing you have fueled your body with healthy, natural, and locally-grown goodness is a great feeling.

We started our meal off with specialty beverages, the Ginger Kombucha and the Turmeric Tonic, while my son mixed his own fresh orange soda. They were all absolutely delicious. I have literally been craving another glass of the Turmeric Tonic since we left. For an appetizer, the waitress recommended the Vegan Veggie Crudites. She explained that this was hummus but she was definitely being humble. Hummus has NEVER tasted this incredible before! They piled perfectly roasted seasonal vegetables on top of this aforementioned hummus – and, well,  it changed. my. life. I can never go back to my old hummus ways, this will be my go-to hummus everytime.

You need gluten-free, vegan or vegetarian? Well get excited because they are the experts! I dove into their “Daily Lasagna” which I thought was a pretty tame name for a gluten-free lasagna made-up of fresh homemade pasta, pesto, walnuts, and bechamel sauce. It tasted like Heaven melting in my mouth! I am absolutely a meat-lover, but I knew if I was going to try a vegetarian dish, this was the place to do it. I was not disappointed. In fact, my tastebuds were singing! It was absolutely delicious and satisfying. It left me wanting to try every other vegetarian item on their menu (I’m coming back for you gnocchi!)!

The kids loved it. To be honest, my kids can be kind of a pain to take-out to eat. They’re way pickier than I would prefer and I prayed they would see something on the menu they liked. We ordered the grilled cheese sandwich and a cheese pizza, and well exccuuuuse me! This grilled cheese looked like something straight out of a magazine and tasted like it too! Meanwhile, my son took his first bite of pizza and spontaneously jumped up and started dancing. I have never seen him do that before… but who could blame him. Just a natural human reaction to the perfect mix of melted cheeses on a homemade pizza crust.

I could go on and on, about the cheesy grits, the Hanger steak, panna cotta… heaven help us, we are going back reaaaallllly, really soon! I had heard the rumors that Hippie Kitchen’s menu was not playing around but our taste buds got to experience it for themselves. And let me tell you… their food was truly amazing. Not just amazing, but thoughtful, and unique. Their menu is tasty and clever in a way that you must experience for yourself.

I must end with this. On the way out, there was a friendly guy sitting at the table sketching in a sketchbook. My daughter saw a coloring opportunity and was all in when he offered her a chance to draw in his book. Turns out, he is the artist who has created all of the incredible pieces in the restaurant. It also turns out he is the owner. Wayne and his wife, Harveen, have brought a little slice of Heaven into Jefferson. There is food for every diet, every preference, and every age at Hippie Kitchen. Stop in and order a Turmeric Tonic for me. You will certainly find yourself staying for dinner!
