Fall Savings For Families with Once Upon A Child

As a mom of three kids, gently used clothing is my jam. My seven-year-old seems to be growing an inch a week, while my identical twin daughters consider themselves to be princess fashionistas of the highest order who – by their own choice, I might add – still like to dress alike pretty often. These two things combined make for lots and lots of outgrown clothes each season. Donating hand-me-down clothes is great in theory, but a lot of the stuff we have is still in really great shape and has plenty of mileage left. I have a 50 gallon Rubbermaid tote that lives in my closet that I use to house clothing for the next season as well as items that are in good shape that my own kids have outgrown. Of course, there are also the various articles of clothing I discover with tags still attached because my fashionistas decided said items did not meet their strict guidelines. It’s not uncommon to stumble upon a 100% cotton shirt my son deemed “too itchy” without even putting it on his body either.

So what’s a busy frugal mom like me to do? Once Upon A Child, conveniently located on Severn in Metairie, not only has a great selection of gently used and new kids stuff, but they will also pay you for your gently used or new with tags clothing. That means that new children’s items are constantly being added to this Metairie store. During a recent visit, I watched the friendly staff evaluate a mom’s pile of gently used things, which ended up putting $50 in her pocket to use for her family. Another shopper was thrilled to find a great high chair while also learning that they would happily accept her barely used Pack n’ Play. The Once Upon A Child team informed her that they keep a running list of recalls; thus, any baby equipment purchased at this Metairie store does come with peace of mind.

The store is bright, colorful and extremely well-organized. Clothes are sorted on racks by size, color AND type, which makes looking for a specific item really easy. Too easy almost. I tend to get overwhelmed at stores that require me to do some digging for the good stuff, and I often end up leaving empty handed. I wanted two navy dresses for the girls and I found not one, but two, immediately at Once Upon A Child without having to dig. The store carries clothing sized newborn to youth 16, as well as shoes. For the littlest football fans, there are even racks of LSU and Saints items. All of these children’s goodies are up to 70% off retail, saving busy New Orleans moms like me time, money and energy because let’s face it, we all need more of all three!

During the month of August, Once Upon A Child in Metairie does giveaways of backpacks stuffed with school supplies. As I have probably already made clear, Once Upon A Child is a great place to stock up on new school clothes for all seasons without breaking the bank. Let’s face it: in Louisiana one day in October it could be 90 degrees and another it could be 50 degrees, so we need to be stocked for all seasons at all times. If you have growing kids, go check it out!
