Close out the summer with these fun August activities in and around New Orleans before heading back to school!

This is in no way intended to be a comprehensive event guide {we maintain a full calendar of events right here}. We’ve pulled out a select number of events for your family to enjoy throughout the month. If you have suggestions or additions, please leave a comment!

NOLA Moms Need to Know :: New Orleans Activities in August 2018

August 3 :: Miss D and her Dancing Dolls, the stars of Lifetime’s hit series Bring It! will be coming to the Saenger Theatre on Friday, August 3 with an all new “Bring It! Live” 2018 summer tour. Tickets are on sale now at ticketmaster.com.

August 3 :: FIT4MOM NOLA is launching Run Club on August 4th. The last day to sign up for this 12 week training for the Children’s Hospital Jazz Half Marathon is August 3rd.

August 3 :: Join us at New Orleans Boulder Lounge for FREE INDOOR ROCK CLIMBING on the first Friday of every month! Available at both locations, 1746 Tchoupitoulas and 2360 St. Claude.

August 3 :: Audubon Zoo’s Dinner and a ZOOvie series is a great way to spend a summer evening under the stars! Again this year, Cool Zoo/Gator Run will be open for a small additional fee. Bring your chairs and blankets, bring your own dinner or dine at the Zoo. Food trucks will be onsite as well as some regular Zoo concessions will be open…come hungry! This event is sponsored by Swedish Fish Tropical.

August 3 :: It’s your favorite Friday of the month – Northshore Food Truck Round-Up and Food Drive! Local food trucks will be in our Beer Garden serving up dinner, so forget about cooking and invite your friends. Our Tap Room offers an ample selection of cold brews to choose from – as well as our craft sodas. There will be games outside and live music by Casey Saba Music in the courtyard, and our own playlist out in the beer garden. Feel free to bring your picnic blankets and chairs to enjoy the night under our string lights. FOOD TRUCKS: Sweet Daddy’s BBQ – Covington, The Quesadilla Company, NOLA mia Food Truck, Frytastic and Rolling Cones Ice Cream, LLC. We’ll be collecting your donations of non-perishable food items to help restock the shelves of the Northshore Food Bank! Let’s come together to help our neighbors in need. The event is FREE TO ENTER! All ages welcome. Our beer garden and patio are dog-friendly.

August 3-4 :: Prytania Theatre Presents Mrs. Doubtfire at The Summer Kids Series! The $6.00 Ticket INCLUDES admission & a popcorn & drink of your choice!

August 4 :: Join us at the Downtown Market every 1st Saturday of the month for a Marketeer Club kid’s activity! We will have market inspired activities for your future foodies to enjoy. Marketeer faves include market story time, scavenger hunts, and veggie stamps!

August 4 :: Children’s Pediatrics is celebrating the Grand Opening of its Northlake Clinic in Covington!. Attendees will be invited to visit with the miniature horses of Equestrian Angel Outreach Program, meet characters from Princess Parties “R” Us, FREE hearing and vision testing just in time for back to school, kid friendly activities and refreshments, meet our physicians and tour our newly renovated clinic. Please register to attend this free event, and you will receive a free fidget spinner as well!

August 4 :: Spark a curiosity for nature in your kid as they make interdisciplinary connections in the Discovery Garden at Longue Vue through our SEEDLINGS program. Through self-guided activities that foster experiential learning and creativity, Seedling kids (ages 6 and up) engage in seed planting, art-making, insect observation, story time, and more! Play, learn, and grow as you and your Seedling explorer investigate new ideas and make new friends. $5 per participant for non-members, FREE for members. No pre-registration required. Members are required show Family Level membership card for free admission. This event is SHINE only and will be cancelled for inclement weather.

August 4 :: The Positive and Prepared Childbirth Class at Touro is a weekend class designed to give expectant couples the confidence, knowledge and skills necessary for a safe and satisfying family-centered birth experience. The class offers birth education as well as hands-on practice of relaxation, breathing, and coping techniques for labor and birth. Partners will learn how to best comfort and support a laboring woman and moms will learn to utilize their own unique coping skills. This class does have a fee, and registration is required.

August 4 :: Family Yoga at Live Oak Yoga is for yogis age 5 and up. The class is a balance between active dynamic movements and moments of stillness and mindfulness. Students will be exposed to traditional yoga poses, sun salutations, and some partner poses. Embrace your inner child! Children should be accompanied by an adult.

August 4 :: The First Saturday on Magazine Street is extra special. Many shops, restaurants, and Magazine Street businesses offer up discounts, specials, exclusive free events, and more!

August 5 :: When You Wish Entertainment is hosting Jump Back to School with JJ for kids who love big bows and dancing at English Turn Country Club! Come learn a dance from JJ Sequins, decorate your very own bow, have an amazing lunch, and swim after! Tickets required.

August 10-11 :: MJ Live is the #1 Michael Jackson Tribute in the country! Join the Saenger Theatre in experiencing the excitement and THRILLS of Michael Jackson. Tickets are available at ticketmaster.com.

August 11 :: Based on Dr. Harvey Karp’s breakthrough ideas, the parent educators at Children’s Hospital’s Parenting Center will teach pregnant couples, new parents and caregivers calming techniques proven to quickly calm crying and boost infant sleep during Kohl’s Happiest Baby on the Block at Touro. This class is FREE, but registration is required.

August 11-12 ::  The Great Play Date at the Pontchartrain Center in Kenner includes plenty of ways of the kids to get out some energy! Bounce houses, giant slides, largest indoor maze in the Gulf south, face-painting, obstacle course, video games for the bigger kids and even a special play area for the little ones. And you won’t have to pay extra for any of it! All the activities are included in your child’s $10 ticket (adults are free). Tickets are available here.

August 18 :: Join Longue Vue’s Artist-in-Residence for Kids Create!, a fun art class budding artists from 6 – 10 and their parent/guardian. Free for Longue Vue members and only $5 per person for nonmembers, no pre-registration required!

August 18 :: Ivanov’s Gymnastics is hosting our Annual Fall Open House on Saturday from 11:00am-1:00pm! Stop by and see us! Play in the gym! Meet some of our teachers! Bring a friend and show them around! Schedules and registration forms will be available at the Front Desk or on our website by July 21st. Registration for the Fall Session begins on July 23, 2018, and we will also be taking registrations during Open House. August 19 :: Join Longue Vue House and Garden’s Artist-in-Residence, Jamar Pierre, for a Family Painting Workshop. Families will work together on a single piece as a group guided by J.Pierre. Tickets are $20 for each adult and $10 for kids (ages 4 – 17) with up to 6 individuals per canvas. Materials included in the price. Registration required.

August 23 :: Family and Friends CPR teaches the basic technique of CPR and relief of choking for a child or infant. It is perfect for new parents, grandparents, sitters or anyone involved in the care of an infant. Each participant will receive a handbook. The course uses guidelines created by the American Heart Association. This class is free of charge; however, registration is required. Upon registration please indicate the total number of participants who will be attending with you as space is limited.

August 25 :: Open your toddler’s eyes to the wonders of the natural world though tactile & positive learning experiences in the Discovery Garden and Longue Vue through our SPROUTS program. Unwind and grow as you and your little Sprout investigate plants, animals, crafts, stories, and songs that foster holistic early childhood development! $5 per participant for non-members, FREE for members. No pre-registration required. Members are required show Family Level membership card for free admission. This event is SHINE only and will be cancelled for inclement weather.

August 25 :: The Ogden Museum will be celebrating their 15th Anniversary on August 25 from 10:00am-5:00pm. Come join us to celebrate with a day of art, food, music, crafts and more! This event is free and fun for the whole family. Come Celebrate the South!

 

Recurring Events and Specials

Mondays :: Stroller Strides is a total fitness program that moms can do with their babies. It includes strolling around the park, resistance band workouts, and lots of fun for our stroller babes. Meet us in Palmer Park every Monday. Your first class is free!

Thursdays :: The Ogden Museum is hosting Young Audiences Baby Artsplay! Presented by The Helis Foundation on Thursdays from August 9 – September 13, from 9:30-10:00am. Six 30-minute workshops allow children to explore, observe and investigate their world through song, dance and movement experiences. For ages 4 months to 3 years with a caretaker. Friday – Sunday :: Friends of City Park’s Historical Musical Train Tour is running now through November 2018 with three shows (11:00am, 1:30pm, & 4:00pm) on Fridays, Saturdays, & Sundays. Tickets sold at the door or online in advance.

Saturdays :: Calling all infants, their caregivers, doulas and other birth workers! Join the Ohm Well for our Baby and Me: Yoga & Tea series. We will meet Saturday mornings in the yoga studio located inside the Esplanade at City Park apartments. Session Includes: Tea Talk – We will discuss weekly themes and participants will be given an opportunity to share, vent and build community together. Tea will be provided. Asana – We will engage in a gentle yoga and meditation practice designed specifically for caregivers and their little ones. Mats, blankets and other props will be provided. Feel free to bring anything else to make you and your little one comfortable. Sessions are recommended for infants 8 weeks old and older. $12 Drop -in, $50 for a 5 class package. Space is limited and open to 10 families. Pre-registration each week is recommended.

Saturdays :: FIT4Baby is a PRENATAL fitness class held at The Downtown Fitness Center in Canal Place every Saturday. It includes strength training, cardio, balance and a lot fun! Get to know other expecting moms and create YOUR healthy village. Each class ends with a good stretch and guided meditation. Enjoy this precious time and let us help you prepare for baby to come. bring water. No Gym membership is necessary and we validate parking.
