Recommendations from a Podcast Junkie

Hi my name is Tara and I am podcast addict.

I basically have a podcast playing most times of the day. While I’m brushing my teeth and getting ready each morning, I’m listening to a podcast. There is almost always a podcast playing in the background while I am at my desk working. Nothing makes folding laundry more bearable than a good podcast in your ears. So I am going to share some of favorite regular shows by genres and why I love them.

News

There are two podcasts I listen to every single week day. The Daily from the New York Times and Up First from NPR. I don’t watch tv news, like ever. So I like that I can listen to these two and get thorough, concise and unbiased news to stay up to date with what is going on in our world. They both are always under half an hour with The Daily usually being about 20 minutes and Up First being about 15. So it’s not a huge time investment on my part to stay in the know.

Crime Stories

I’m not a super die hard true crime person but I definitely do enjoy a good crime story every now and then. For your straight up true crime stories Sword and Scale is the show for you. Definitely will fulfill your ‘who done it’ craving. One of my very favorite podcasts is Criminal. The stories could be from the victim’s perspective or the perpetrator or a law enforcement officer. Some crimes are serious, others slightly humorous.

Human Interest Stories

These are some of my favorite road trip podcasts. Or recently my husband and I painted baseboards in our house, these were the podcasts that kept me distracted from the monotony. This American Life is a beautiful and diverse podcast that shares a lot of interesting stories. StoryCorps is a collection of internews from all types of people just telling their story. This is Love is a sweet podcast where each episode features a love story. But not always in the tradition sense, could be between siblings or an animal and then a traditional romantic love story.

Something for the kids

There are a lot of great kids podcasts out there and a lot can depend on what your kids are interested in. Two of my family’s current favorites are Wow in the World, a science and exploration podcast and Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls. Wow in the World is equal parts silly and educational. It definitely keeps in my kids entertained while also providing some pretty interesting learning for kids and parents. Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls is based off a popular story collections about brave girls throughout history and their often unknown stories.

Learn something new / cool / bizarre

These are the podcasts to listen to to gain all the cool stories you can tell at a party and impress your friends later with your obscure knowledge. RadioLab, 99% Invisible, Revisionist History and Hidden Brain are always on my weekly rotation. I’m constantly learning things I didn’t know or looking at things I had previously considered uninteresting and looking at them in whole new ways.

Casts is my favorite podcast app; it’s how I listen to all of them. By now you might be wondering how I am able to listen to so many podcasts. Well I will let you in on a little secret; I listen to them on 1.5 speed. This little trick might not be for everyone, but I am a fast talker and thinker and I enjoy listening to my podcasts this way and I am able to listen to so much more of them in less time.

I’ve shown you mine, now show me yours. What are your must listen to podcasts? When do you listen?
