This is in no way intended to be a comprehensive event guide {we maintain a full calendar of events right here}. We’ve pulled out a select number of events for your family to enjoy throughout the month. If you have suggestions or additions, please leave a comment!

NOLA Moms Need to Know :: New Orleans Activities in May 2018

May 1-2 :: The NOLA Crawfish Festival will be a true feast for the senses. Attendees can loosen up and hang out every day from 3:00-10:00pm within the carefree backdrop of Central City BBQ,while enjoying the mouthwatering scents and flavors of over 6,000 pounds of hot boiled crawfish prepared on-site by Chris “Shaggy” Davis and his NOLA Crawfish King staff. Along with some of New Orleans finest Musicians!

May 3 :: Young Audiences Baby Artsplay! Presented by The Helis Foundation is a 30-minute workshop that allows children to explore, observe and investigate their world and the Ogden Museum through song, dance and movement experiences. For ages 4 months to 3 years with a caretaker. Register here.

May 5 :: St. Tammany Art Association, in partnership with the City of Covington, presents the Covington Art Market, a juried market of visual arts and crafts held six times per year on first Saturdays within the Spring and Fall seasons, March, April, May, October and November, and on the first Sunday of December, noon to 5:00pm, in conjunction with St. Tammany’s Holiday Festival of Arts, a Shop Local Artists Week event. The Saturday markets are held from 10:00am-2:00pm. The market is now hosted in its new location, Art Alley, the community gathering space between St. Tammany Art Association’s Art House and H.J. Smith & Sons General Store, 320 N. Columbia St. in downtown Covington. The event features a variety of work from local and regional artists, including jewelry, photography, paintings, woodworking, fiber art and more.

May 5 :: Growing Gardeners introduces children to the fun of gardening while learning about (and playing with!) plants, food, and ecosystems. Children ages 6-9 welcome. We meet at the front entrance of The Botanical Garden at 10:00am for drop off. $17 per class. $14 per class if you register for 6 classes at once! *When paying in advance classes do not need to be used consecutively.

May 5 :: During Mini Art Center Open Studio hours we open our doors to the community! Families are welcomed to make art in a fun studio atmosphere with abundant materials for exploration. Visitors have access to 5+ art making stations, including drawing & painting, animation, a reading corner, and one unique guided activity each week. Come make some art! No pre-registration required.

May 6 :: Happy Birthday and Happy Mother’s Day! Beatrixbell Handcrafted Jewelry & Gift turns ONE on Sunday May 6th. 15% off all items including GIFT CERTIFICATES which make the perfect Mother’s Day present! Refreshments, champagne toast, a raffle, and free gift wrapping.

May 10 :: Learn how to make the perfect Platters and Boards with Simplee Gourmet NOLA. This cooking class show you how to make entertaining quick and easy for $50.00.

May 10 :: Le Meridien New Orleans presents, “LM Cinema,” a complimentary outdoor movie night. On Thursday, May 10, we’re showing “Daddy’s Home” in our Palm Garden. Doors open at 6:00pm and the movie starts around 7. Enjoy a complimentary wine tasting and popcorn along with a Petit Plates menu and wine specials. RSVP in advance here.

May 11 :: The 2nd Annual Jazz in the Park Crab Festival featuring Michael Franks & Loose Ends takes place at Armstrong Park.

May 11 :: West Jefferson Medical Center is hosting a Stroke Awareness Day to educate the public on the warning signs of a stroke, provide free screenings and offer a variety of educational resources.

May 12 :: The Seventh Annual Crawfish Mambo: Cook-off and Music Festival is a community-wide festival celebrating two favorite Louisiana traditions: crawfish and music.

May 12 :: Enjoy an early Mother’s Day Brunch with Platter’s and Boards with Simplee Gourmet NOLA for $65.00.

May 12 :: Kids Night Out is a 4 hour camp from 6:00-10:00pm once a month at Empire Gymnastics. $20 per person includes 4-hours in our facility, pizza, drinks and a movie at the end of the night.

May 13 :: Audubon Zoo’s Mother’s Day event presented by Children’s Hospital and Touro Infirmary offers moms of all ages complimentary admission into the Zoo on Mother’s Day. Mother’s Day is always popular, so expedite your entry by purchasing and printing tickets at home. Complimentary admission tickets for moms will be available at Audubon Zoo’s front gate when you arrive! Grammy® Award winner Irma Thomas returns for her 35th annual appearance as headliner. The full Mother’s Day lineup of food, music and family fun begins at 10:00am. New for this year will be “Mom-tastic’’ activities presented by Children’s Hospital and Touro Infirmary. Thomas also will lead a “lemonade toast’’ for all mothers sponsored by Raising Cane’s.

May 15 :: Have your car seat fitted safely and correctly for FREE by nationally certified technicians from Children’s Hospital and The Parenting Center. To make an appointment for one of our monthly fittings, please call (504) 896-9591. Drive-ins are also welcome!

May 16 :: Rouses Markets will be hosting a Kids Cooking Class at our Tchoupitoulas location. This month the kids will make Strawberry Pistachio Cupcakes and homemade Guacamole. They’ll get to sample salsa paired with Hola Nola chips to go along with the guacamole! Each child will have the option to enjoy their delicious creations or take them home to enjoy later. They will also be sent home with a recipe to make the cupcakes and guacamole at home. Space is limited, ages 5-14. Sign up today!

May 16 :: Join for story time, activities and a healthy snack during Little Acorns. Children ages 18months -4 years old are welcome. $3 per child; adult chaperone required at no cost. Pre-registration is encouraged but not required.

May 18 :: New Orleans Recreation Development and the Autism Society of Greater New Orleans present an evening full of fun activities for the whole family. Family Game Night at the Rosenwald Recreation Center provides an opportunity for all children, including those with special needs, to have fun, in a safe and accepting environment. May 18 :: Join us at the Rosenwald Recreation Center for Jumanji in the park! The Movies in the Park series features FREE, family-friendly outdoor movie screenings at NORD playgrounds for residents across the City. All movies are FREE. The movies will begin at sunset, between 6:15 p.m. and 6:45 p.m., and will be moved indoors if there is rain.

May 18 :: Enjoy a Friday Night Fun Night designed for children with lots of games & play time in the Ivanov’s Gym. We offer great supervised gymnastics and a fun program for children ages 4.5 and older – with plenty of physical activities and fun! Non-members are welcome! Don’t forget a Smile! Events for children ages 4.5 and up. Pizza and drinks provided! Please register in advance at the front desk, by phone or by e-mail. Spaces are limited. Registration for the next Fun Night opens the week after each Fun Night. $12.00 for members, $17.00 for non-members.

May 19 :: Jumpin’ Into Summer is a free kids event at the Covington Trailhead, featuring kids summer activities and live entertainment.

May 20 :: Join us at Little Pnuts Sunday May 20, from 12:00-4:00pm as we celebrate Earth Day. We will be learning all about the Dugong, a cousin of the manatee, that is found in Thailand. Dugong have been put on the endangered species list for fear of extinction. We will be learning about how we can help protect them and the animals in our very own Lake Ponchartrain home to our very own manatees. We’ll have games, prizes and special treats all afternoon long. We can’t wait to celebrate our earth with you!

May 21 :: Pony Tales is having early Horse and Pony Riding Camp starting May 21st! Children 5-12. Days are sold singly. Pre-registration is required. No experience necessary, we teach complete beginners to ride!

May 25 :: The New Orleans Ballet Theatre is aspiring to create greater access to local professional full-length ballet productions by establishing a main stage performance each spring. This year, the company will present Giselle, one of the most loved and famous of classical ballets. With the professional dancers of New Orleans Ballet Theatre and a select group of young dancers from the city, this production of Giselle will be an exciting addition to NOBTs repertoire. The full-length classical ballet will be performed at the Orpheum Theatre.

May 27 :: Bayou Country Superfest organizers announced today that music icon George Strait will make a very rare concert appearance on Sunday, May 27 at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans. Joining Strait in this historic concert event will be Chris Stapleton, Little Big Town, Kacey Musgraves, and Midland. The King of Country Music, George Strait has accumulated 60 number one singles, the most of any country artist in history.

Mondays :: Join NOLA Riverside, FIT4MOM in Palmer Park every Monday! Get a great workout with baby in tow, then let the kiddos out to play. Our Motivational Mondays will help you and your babe start the week off with a smile. bring water, a mat, a jogging stroller and your child. FIRST CLASS IS ALEAYS FREE! Sign-up online.

Mondays :: Baby Boot Camp New Orleans is offering Baby Boot Camp classes every Monday at Audubon Park at 9:30am near the Newman Bandstand. Bring your little ones, a stroller, yoga mat and plenty of water! Your first class is always free!

Wednesdays (May 2, 9 & 16 only) :: Chick-fil-A Kenner is offering Mommy & Me Mornings! This is a weekly yoga and movement class for moms and little ones right here at our restaurant! Bring your yoga mat and start your day off right with some yoga and Chick-fil-A breakfast. One free breakfast will be given away at each class!

Tuesdays :: Baby Boot Camp New Orleans is offering Baby Boot Camp classes every Tuesday at City Park at 9:30am on the Great Lawn! Bring your little ones, a stroller, yoga mat and plenty of water! Your first class is always free!

Wednesdays :: Join NOLA Riverside, FIT4MOM in Audubon Park every Wednesday! Get a great workout with baby in tow, then let the kiddos out to play! Our Wednesday class will make your hump day a breeze. Bring water, a mat, jogging stroller and kiddo. FIRST CLASS IS ALWAYS FREE! Sign-up online.

Thursdays :: FIT4Baby is a PRENATAL fitness class held at The Downtown Fitness Center in Canal Place, every Thursday and Saturday. It includes strength training, cardio, balance and a lot fun! Get to know other expecting moms and create YOUR healthy village. Each class ends with a good stretch and guided meditation. Enjoy this precious time and let us help you prepare for baby to come. bring water. No Gym membership is necessary and we validate parking.

Thursdays :: Baby Boot Camp New Orleans is offering Baby Boot Camp classes every Thursday at City Park at 9:30am on the Great Lawn! Bring your little ones, a stroller, yoga mat and plenty of water! Your first class is always free!

Fridays :: Baby Boot Camp New Orleans is offering Baby Boot Camp classes every Friday at Audubon Park at 9:30am near the Newman Bandstand. Bring your little ones, strollers, yoga mat and plenty of water. Your first class is always free!

Saturdays :: Calling all infants, their caregivers, doulas and other birth workers! Join the Ohm Well for our Baby and Me: Yoga & Tea series. We will meet Saturday mornings in the yoga studio located inside the Esplanade at City Park apartments. Session Includes: Tea Talk – We will discuss weekly themes and participants will be given an opportunity to share, vent and build community together. Tea will be provided. Asana – We will engage in a gentle yoga and meditation practice designed specifically for caregivers and their little ones. Mats, blankets and other props will be provided. Feel free to bring anything else to make you and your little one comfortable. Sessions are recommended for infants 8 weeks old and older. $12 Drop -in, $50 for a 5 class package. Space is limited and open to 10 families. Pre-registration each week is recommended.
