NOLA Moms Need to Know :: New Orleans Activities in January 2018

Happy New Year! With it, comes an opportunity to make new memories during one (or all!) of our January events!

This is in no way intended to be a comprehensive event guide {we maintain a full calendar of events right here}. We’ve pulled out a select number of events for your family to enjoy throughout the month. If you have suggestions or additions, please leave a comment!

January 1 :: Start out healthy with New Year’s Day Run/Walk at Crescent Park. Finishers get a custom screen printed champagne style glass … Earn yours !

January 3-5 :: Bra Genie is thrilled to announce that their new location in Lakeside Shopping Center is opening January 3rd, 2018! Be one of our first 25 customers January 3rd – 5th and receive a free cami, tank or bralette from NikiBiki!

January 6 :: New Orleans families can expect to ring in the Mardi Gras season at the 3rd Annual Caluda’s King Cake Festival in Harahan! With all Caluda’s King Cake sales from this festival benefitting ARNO (Animal Rescue New Orleans), you can taste all the delicious king cake and feel good doing it, too! This is a FREE festival that is both child and pet-friendly!

January 6 :: The 1st Annual New Orleans Tamale Festival at Poor Boys Bar will feature a variety of tamale vendors, a tamale eating contest and live music free for all ages!

January 6 :: Celebrate King’s Day Celebration, Fireworks and Kick-Off to Tricentennial Mardi Gras on the river.

January 6 :: The Joan of Arc parade, beginning at 7:00pm, is an annual walking parade to celebrate St Joan of Arc’s birthday and Epiphany. The procession is inspired by Joan’s time in France in the 1400s, where she liberated the citizens of Orleans, France from British siege. Parade goers can be found dressed in gold, with plenty of king cake to share!

January 6 :: Instead of throwing a traditional parade with floats, the Phunny Phorty Phellows also ‘Herald the Arrival of Carnival,’ the krewe loads up on a street car and rides all way the down St. Charles Ave. – from Uptown to Canal Street – and back.

January 6 :: Commemorate the Battle of New Orleans Anniversary at Chalmette Battlefield with living history experts dressed as civilians and troops from 1815 demonstrate military drills, fire cannons and muskets, perform period music, and share life in 1815 via hands-on activities, games, and craft demonstrations. Free to the public.

January 8, 22 :: ZukaBaby’s Parent Meetup will be hosted twice a month by professionals from TBEARS—Tulane Building Early Relationships Support & Services—to help provide guidance on everything from baby’s developmental milestones to feeding, sleeping, new sibling transitions, and more. Open to all new parents and parents-to-be, from pregnancy to babies aged 0-24 months. No pre-registration required.

January 10 :: Join ZukaBaby and Nurse Nikki for an a non-biased, informative discussion on infant nutrition (breastfeeding, formula feeding, or a blend of both) and to ask questions, express concerns, and receive professional support. January 13 :: Join Just Breathe Yoga for an Introduction to Yamuna Ball Rolling lead by Certified Practitioner Virginia Davis to help release fascia, relieve pain & tightness to improve overall body health. This method of practice restores connective tissue & improves performance for any fitness program helping to prevent injuries. You feel amazing after!

January 15 :: Celebrate the City of New Orleans Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Celebration Program at the historic Al Davis Park on from 9:00-10:00 am.

January 15, 29 :: ZukaBaby is hosting Story Time! Join us twice a month for a story and play date. Open to all parents and babies aged 0-24 months! No pre-registration required.

January 18 :: Join ZukaBaby and Nurse Nikki to learn basic skills to revive your child or infant and relieve them from choking. This is a non-certifying class. $20/person. RSVP: [email protected] or 504.407.2700.

January 20 :: ZukaBaby is hosting Cloth 101 Clinic. Learn what to expect when beginning your journey with cloth diapers, or bring us your questions and concerns, and we’ll help you troubleshoot! January 23 :: Would you like to adopt a fruit tree, free of charge, as part of the Endless Orchard project with the artists Fallen Fruit? Pelican Bomb, A Studio in the Woods, and Newcomb Art Museum are partnering to bring artists Fallen Fruit to host a Fruit Tree Adoption at Tulane. This is just one part of a larger project that includes planting a network of public fruit trees along the Bayou Bienvenue Wetland Triangle, throughout the Lower 9th Ward, and Pontchartrain Park in Gentilly.

January 24 :: Visit the Saenger Theatre for WILD KRATTS – LIVE!, an all new theatrical stage show based on the hit animated television series Wild Kratts by Martin and Chris Kratt, stars of the Emmy-nominated Wild Kratts step out LIVE ON STAGE.

January 26 :: Ivanov’s Gymnastics Academy is hosting our January Friday Night Fun Night! Parents-Night Out, Members and Non-members are welcome. Gymnastics, Games & Music, Pizza, Fun, Tumble-Track & Gym Play time. Pre-registration is required.

January 27 :: The Krewe of Bilge Mardi Gras Boat Parade will begin at 11:00am in Slidell, starting at the Marina Cafe.

January 27 :: The Krewe of Poseidon in Slidell rolls at 6:00pm beginning on Spartan Drive.

January 27 :: The Mercedes-Benz Superdome hosts Monster Jam, an adrenaline-charged family entertainment providing jaw-dropping displays and gravity-defying feats that promises to always leave fans entertained.

January 28 :: Ochsner presents the 5th Annual King Cake Festival – a celebration benefiting babies and children at Ochsner! Held in Champions Square, join us to taste king cakes from the finest bakeries, enjoy live music and support pediatric programs! More info coming soon.

January 28 :: The Krewe of Little Rascals parade annually rolls along Veterans Boulevard from Clearview Shopping Center to the end at Martin Behrman. Our approximately four-mile Parade makes no turns on Severn or Bonnabel. Led by the Sheriff’s vehicles and our KLR Pace Car, the Parade travels the traditional Metairie Parade Route on Veterans Blvd.

Mondays :: NOLA Riverside, FIT4MOM is giving a Stroller Strides class at The Moon Walk! Moms bring your babies (6wks-5yrs) and your jogging stroller for a great workout. Please register.

Wednesdays :: ZukaBaby is hosting a Baby Sign Language Sign & Play event! Learn to sign and sing a new song, share story time with friends, and enjoy open play. No pre-registration required.

Wednesdays :: NOLA Riverside, FIT4MOM is giving a Stroller Strides class in Audubon Park! Moms bring your babies (6wks-5yrs) and your jogging stroller for a great workout. Please register.

Wednesdays :: FIT4MOM is hosting Our Village Playgroup at the Saint Charles Playground in Audubon Park! Moms with children ages 6mo-5yrs are welcome to attend. No membership required. Please register.

Thursdays :: Uptown Needle & CraftWorking offers an After-School Sewing Club for ages 7-12. Pre-registration is required.

If you haven’t yet, be sure to join our Neighborhood Community Groups as we’re always planning events in areas across New Orleans!
