This is in no way intended to be a comprehensive event guide {we maintain a full calendar of events right here}. Rather, we’ve pulled out a select number of events for your family to enjoy throughout the month. Living in New Orleans can be overwhelming, but our hope is that consolidating events into a resource such as this will make your job as entertainment director a tad easier! May 1 :: See Johnette Downing in concert at the French Market!

May 1 :: Still looking for Summer Camp for your campers ages 3-12? Well don’t miss OPEN HOUSE at Vamonos NOLA {4:00pm-6:30pm}! Come by and see what all the FUN is about! Drop by and be entered in a drawing for prizes including a free week of SUMMER CAMP! 6200 St. Charles Avenue – Hasta Pronto!

May 1 :: Check out the Carey Street Crawl in Slidell. Juju the Good Voodoo will be there.

May 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29 :: Enjoy Music in the Park at Kenner’s Rivertown! These events are FREE and open to the public; no outside food or drink is allowed.

May 1-9 :: Waxing the City is offering a Mother’s Day gift card deal! Buy a $60 gift card for $50! Offer valid May 1st-9th (Gift cards cannot be used same day as purchased).

May 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30 :: Take the kids out to Movies in the Park! Enjoy family friendly movies on an outdoor screen at Kenner’s Heritage Park. Admission is FREE, and concessions will be available for purchase.

May 4 :: Thibodeaux School of Music is hosting a Musical Story Time for children ages 1-4 and a caregiver on Monday, May 4 at 9:30am. Listen to books, sing songs and play instruments. The theme this month is Trains! $10/child ($5 if child is currently enrolled in Kindermusik class at TSM) or $15/family with two or more children. No pre-registration required, just drop in and have fun! TSM is at 2436 Valence St.

May 5 :: Go get yourself some Cinco de Mayo fun at Bakers Dozen in the form of margarita donuts!

May 6 :: Nola Nesting celebrates the Super Sibling! Becoming a big brother or sister is a life changing event. This one hour class introduces children ages two to six to being an older sibling. It’s a time to learn about what to expect and celebrate the child’s new role. Topics include the size and sounds of a newborn, how mom and dad take care of the baby and how to touch and hold a baby. May 6, 13, 20 and 27 :: Wednesdays at the Square is back (held Wednesdays 5:00-8:00pm)! YLC Wednesday at the Square is a FREE spring concert series with food and drink for sale to benefit the Young Leadership Council.

May 8 :: Madeline’s Kindermusik is having a playdate! The theme this month is Around the World. Join us at 5:30pm on May 8th as we travel around the globe and explore the world’s music. Children ages 0-6 and a caregiver are welcome to attend. The playdate will be held at Thibodeaux School of Music at 2436 Valence St. It’s $10/child ($5 if currently enrolled in a Kindermusik class). No pre-registration required, just drop in and have fun!

May 8 :: Lakeview Creative Arts is hosting “Night of the Ninja” from 7-10 pm, which a fun parents’ night out opportunity for children ages 6 and up. Kids will learn and play with our karate students and staff, have pizza, and finish the night off with a movie. Cost is $30 per child. May 8 :: Head to Sippin’ In Seersucker (at the Shops at Canal Place | 6:00 – 9:00pm) for an evening of light bites, Southern cocktails, shopping specials and live entertainment featuring Robin Barnes and the New Orleans Swamp Donkeys! Tickets include open bar and free parking.

May 9 :: Join KINDRED for their Grand Opening! Stop by from 10 am to noon for  mimosas and sweet treats for parents and age-appropriate snacks and beverages for the little ones. Patrons can view the studio, shop pop-ups from Baby Bump Maternity & Children’s and ZukaBaby, play and register to win giveaways including a $50 KINDRED gift card. Also, 15% of all unlimited monthly memberships purchased that day will go towards the New Orleans Women’s Shelter.

May 9 :: PLAYBUILD NOLA hosts monthly “Build by Ear: Bridging Music and Architecture” workshops once a month. All materials are provided by the Playbuild staff. Just come ready to listen and build {11:30am – 2:00pm}! Each workshop will be tied to a specific New Orleans musician and architectural style and is FREE. Also held on May 9 is the Kids Swing and Sing; kids of all ages are invited to come to our French Market location (916 N. Peters Street – behind A Tisket A Tasket Bookstore) for this interactive concert featuring Jayna Morgan!

May 9 :: The Champagne Stroll on Magazine from 5-9pm. While you are shopping make sure to visit Waxing the City for complimentary wine, champagne and chances to win a fabulous giveaway!

May 10 :: Bakers Dozen will have its special Raspberry iced donuts available for Mother’s Day. With purchase, get a free carnation and custom coloring sheet(s) for mom!

May 9-10 :: NOLA Veggie Fest at the New Orleans Healing Center. There’s a lot to see and do at this fun, family-friendly event. You can try free food samples, check out local product vendors, attend cooking demos, listen to speakers, get new recipes, watch short films, hang out in the kids area, enjoy a delicious  lunch and learn ways to include more veggies in your diet.

May 15 :: Join Vamonos NOLA for our first Spanish Playdate on Friday, May 15th from 4:00-6:00pm at 6200 St.Charles Ave to help raise money for Send a Kid to Camp Scholarship Fund! Kids will have a variety of activities to choose from during a fun filled two hours of Camp Style Choice time all while being exposed to Spanish. Kids ages 3-8 will have snack then play the afternoon away in art, dramatic play, construction and table games! Parents can linger and observe the play based immersion or drop off and run an errand or have a coffee all while contributing to a good cause! Register Here Now to reserve your spot!

May 16 :: The Louisiana Children’s Museum will host a Storytelling Festival sponsored by Target on Saturday, May 16 from 11:00am-3:00pm. Kids will be able to take part in a special poetry workshop with award-winning Team Slam New Orleans poet, FreeQuency. Kids will also have the opportunity to illustrate their favorite book cover to contribute to the LCM Story Book art Collection. There will be a Jeopardy game, puppet show and special musical story time with Kindermusik.

May 16  :: If your children (aged 5-10) are into furry friends, this is a not miss event for you! Critter Cinema at the Louisiana SPCA is great fun for animal-loving, pizza-eating movie-watching kids! What better way to end the school week than getting cozy with kitties and canines, enjoying great G-rated critter movies, making friends with other young animal lover and snacking on pizza and popcorn at the Louisiana SPCA. This is a purrrrrfect, fun-filled night for children and an opportunity for parents to enjoy an evening out by themselves. The cost is $35, and advance registration is required by 12:00pm on the Thursday prior.

May 16 :: The Vendor Show Junkies are hosting The Fashion & Lifestyle Market on May 16th! Stop by John Curtis Christian School for family friendly shopping in an air conditioned gym. Over 60 vendors will be present with with products and services including clothing, accessories, art, crafts, and so much more! Join the event group to learn more and stay updated :: {}

May 17 :: The Louisiana Children’s Museum will host a Fit & Free Sunday sponsored by The Edward Wisner Fund. The afternoon will be filled with fitness and fun! The admission is free!

May 17 :: Carla’s Musikgarten New Orleans is offering a special class for parents with young children ages two through six at 4:00 in Uptown.  Topics to be covered include:  When should my child begin music lessons? Why is music education important for my child’s development? When should my child begin private lessons on an instrument? What should I look for in a program or teacher? What should I see in a lesson for a young child?  Space is limited therefore parents are asked to RSVP through the contact page on their website at or call 504-717-5044.

May 22-24 :: Celebrate Greek culture with food, music, fun and games at the 42nd annual Greek Fest. This family friendly festival is held at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral on Robert E. Lee Boulevard.

May 22-25 :: To celebrate our One Year Anniversary, The Outlet Collection at Riverwalk is hosting a full weekend of family friendly activities, including a FREE Movie on the Mississippi screening of Jaws on Sunday, May 24 at 8:00pm in Riverwalk’s Spanish Plaza. Be sure to also stop by and enjoy our outdoor Crawfish Boil on Saturday, May 23. In addition to the latest shopping, dining and entertainment offerings, a Local Appreciation Day featuring exclusive offers will round out the weekend of special events. Beat the heat this Memorial Day Weekend in the Riverwalk’s climate-controlled facilities! Sign up for the Riverwalk Rewards Club to stay up to date on all event information.

May 25-29 :: Painting with a Twist is hosting the first session of “Meet the Masters” kids camp at the New Orleans, Metairie and Mandeville locations. Campers will explore the artist Picasso all week through paintings and other related activities. They will paint a 16″ X 20″ painting each day Monday-Thursday and work on a 24″ x 36″ self-portrait throughout the week. The week will end with an art show Friday evening from 5:00-7:00pm. May 30 :: Chevron Volleyball Classic is a co-rec, round-robin, sand court volleyball tournament benefiting Children’s Hospital. The tournament is held at Coconut Beach Volleyball Complex in Kenner. Teams are divided into three divisions (Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced) and should be composed of 6-10 members; at least 2 members must be female. All players receive complimentary food and drinks all day, a commemorative t-shirt and the chance to win from dozens of draw prizes. Best of net and division winners receive prizes. May 30 :: Nola Nesting is hosting a cocktail hour at Treo for anyone intersted in birth. All birth workers, expecting families and those interested in birth conversation are welcome. Courtney Jarecki, founder of the nonprofit Homebirth Cesarean International will join us for a reading of her new book, Homebirth Cesarean. Free and open to the public. Mocktails are available.

May 31 :: Nola Nesting is making birth classes and postpartum preparation accessble to everyone with Belly to Baby Childbirth Class. The class will meet from 12:00pm – 6:00pm and is a great way to prepare for your birth. This class is perfect for any type of birth you are planning and includes a session with a certified lactation counselor.

Throughout May :: Registration has begun for Rob Noel Junior Champions Golf Academy Summer Junior Golf camps. These camps fill up fast. So now is a good time to register your child to learn a game of a lifetime. To register at a location near you please go here.
