Do you know what VBS stands for?

VBS = Vacation Bible Schoolhip.hop.hope

For some of you, this may conjure up images of a 1980’s summer. Shorts, a t-shirt, permed hair, and running into church with a handful of coins for the offering plate. (Or this may just be me?)

Whether you attend church regularly or not, Vacation Bible School can be such a fun and meaningful part of your child’s summer. Local churches host week-long “schools” and extend an open invitation to community children. The programs are usually free and are jam-packed with skits, music, crafts, recreation games, bible stories, creative snacks, new friends and learning about God’s love.

My oldest is three this year and will be attending his first Vacation Bible School. Given this plus my background in education, I happily took on the charge of being Director of the VBS program at Rayne United Methodist. I’m having so much fun with the planning! I’m getting to work with a great group of men and women to put together a program our children will love, that will teach our children about love.

Rayne’s Vacation Bible School will be the week of July 22-26 from 9:00-12:00. It’s free and open to the public. Children can be registered online. (And adult volunteers can sign up as well!) The curriculum involves an octopus, underwater divers, Old and New Testament stories, songs, a mission project, and lots of fun!

There are VBS programs in every New Orleans neighborhood!

When I think about my goals for Jack and Cora, I care most that they grow up to be loving, kind, giving human beings. Raising a child takes a village, and I am grateful for my church community that will help me in modeling and teaching these qualities to my children from a young age.

If the idea of VBS sounds like a good fit for your family, register for one of the above programs today!

Will your child attend a VBS this summer? Are there other programs you would add to this list?
