In Defense of Direct Sales on Social Media

As I log on to Facebook, I get another notification of an online party. Books, lipstick, pampering products and leggings are among the most popular invites I get. It has become exhausting since there are so many parties and now I know many friends who sell things. However, I’ll let you in on a little secret. I am one of those sellers on Facebook. Gasp! I know.

Even as someone who sells something on social media, I can get annoyed by all of the constant Facebook parties from people you haven’t seen since the second grade. Or, what about the generic message that your “friend” just copy and pasted into Facebook messenger? I know we have all been there. But let me tell you what being a small business owner has done for me.

A year and a half ago, I did something crazy. I joined up to sell a product that I truly loved and believed in. It was the biggest financial decision I’ve made on my own. Thankfully, on most days, I am happy with the choice that I made.

Through this journey, I have gained self-confidence, an online community of customers who have now become my friends, and above all, a job that works with my schedule of being a stay at home mom to three children. I can work as little or as much I want depending on what is going on with my family, and that in itself is a huge blessing.

So instead of going to Ulta or Sephora to spend money on lipstick, maybe contact your friend who is selling that awesome lipstick on Facebook. Or what about that friend of yours selling books? Why not check her out before heading out to Barnes and Noble? Your purchase means much more to her than the big wig CEO of a big box company, let me tell you.

So to all the moms out there hustling on social media, I see you and I’m one of you. Keep on keeping on, you’ve got this!
