Treat the Family to McDonald’s While Helping Those in Need

Imagine your child is sick. Very sick.  You seek out doctors at a hospital miles away from home, friends or family because it’s what is best for your child.  Aside from the medical expenses, you’re also spending a nice chunk of change on a hotel, meals and various other expenses.  The longer the stay out of town, the greater the financial burden becomes. This is where Ronald McDonald House Charities® (RMHC) comes in.

In 1974, McDonald’s helped open the first Ronald McDonald House to keep families close to their sick child and care for the entire family. Families with children in the hospital were given a place to stay, allowing them to stay close at little or no cost.  Today, RHMC supports children and families with programs and services in more than 63 countries and regions.  I personally have multiple friends and family members who have benefitted from this service, one that was invaluable to them in a time of need.

Have dessert and feel good about it

You can give to RMHC year round by donating your change in a Donation Box at a participating McDonald’s, or purchasing a Happy Meal (1¢ from each goes back to the charity), but for the month of March there are even more opportunities to give back.  Treat the family to any McCafé Shamrock beverage at participating McDonald’s March 11-17, and McDonald’s will donate 25¢ to RMHC.  Proceeds from the Shamrock Shake actually helped open the first Ronald McDonald house in 1974!  The Shamrock Shake is back for a limited time this spring, along with four new Shamrock beverages: Chocolate Shamrock Shake, Shamrock Chocolate Chip Frappe, Shamrock Mocha, and Shamrock Hot Chocolate.

Keeping it local

Did you know all the Greater New Orleans McDonald’s are locally owned and operated?  Funds they raise help directly in our community.  Ronald McDonald House Charities of South Louisiana (RMHC-SLA) opened The New Orleans Ronald McDonald House in 1983. The 15-bedroom house, located at 4403 Canal Street, serves an average of 85 families each month.

In addition to the house, RMHC-SLA also provides free immunizations for children in New Orleans and surrounding parishes on the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile.  With the support of McDonald’s owner/operators in the greater New Orleans area, RMHC-SLA also offers college scholarships to students in financial need who have demonstrated academic achievement, leadership, and community involvement. Last year, 40 – $1,000 scholarships were awarded to students in the greater New Orleans area!

Can you spare a quarter?

Donations to RMHC can give kids a place to play after a long day at the hospital; parents a home for a good night’s sleep and a warm meal nearby; families a relief from the financial and emotional burdens of traveling for their child’s medical care.  Can you spare your change today?

Check out the impact of donating your change!
