Our Girl vs. Grill Inspired Tour of Langenstein’s With Julie Fortenberry, Registered Dietitian at Touro Infirmary {Sponsored Recap}

Disclosure: This event was hosted as the follow up to the Girl Vs. Grill sponsored recipe series that we hosted on the blog a few weeks ago. Many thanks to our sponsors Touro Infirmary and Langenstein’s for hosting this event. The photos in this post are thanks to our photography sponsor Joli Renee Photography, but we had several fun photographers join us! Links to all photographs are at the bottom of this post.

Summer conjures up visions of barbecue, roasted corn and watermelon for some, but for others summertime can be diet quicksand as those mayo laden potato salads and strawberry daiquirisLangensteins Collage add up the calories FAST. For these reasons (and more), it was quite a treat to be able to tour Langenstein’s this past Wednesday with Touro Infirmary’s Registered Dietitian, Julie Fortenberry, and chat about healthier options for summer foods.

Julie lead approximately 10 moms on both a 9:00am and 6:00pm tour of Langenstein’s. She started the tours in the produce section – “the very best section” as she told us – with tips and tricks for veggies that many of us had never considered. She chatted about different grilling options including artichokes and added that fruit and veggie platters are always an appropriate thing to bring with you to a barbeque. Looking for a healthy dipping option? Julie suggested hummu (such as our generous swag sponsors from Baton Rouge, Ruth’s Recipes) or a (real) greek yogurt dip. We continued from the produce section on through the store from the meats, to the barbeque and even to the … GASP… butter section!

Here are some of our favorite tips and tricks that Julie shared with us:

  • Crawfish are a diet “YAY!” Julie recommends just staying very well hydrated. Whether you are eating salty foods or not, she recommends drinking  half of your body weight in ounces of water (i.e. a 200 lb person should drink 100 ounces of water/day).
  • Looking for a low calorie beverage? Try sparkling waters (think LaCroix); just make sure to avoid the ones with added sugars or artificial sweeteners.
  • Like barbecue sauce? Make sure your favorite sauce isn’t bogging down your best diet plans with tons of added sugar.
  • Do not be afraid of healthy fats! It is ok to use butter sparingly (Julie recommends Kerrygold Organic butter, which Langenstein’s carries).
  • If you can afford it, buy grassfed meat for better quality.
  • Do you like salmon? A darker pink is indicative of a higher nutritional content.
