Experience the Sights and Sounds of Junior League of New Orleans’ Touch a Truck

“A bus, a bus!!!” Jane shouted with as much enthusiasm as possible. From her seat at our cafe table outside of Surrey’s, she waved her arms and screamed, “hi bus driver!” “hi people!” It’s amazing, isn’t it? That something so routine for all of us adults, whether you are on the bus or simply drowning out its noise as it passes you by, can bring a child so much joy and excitement.

When the doctor held up my precious baby and declared, “It’s a girl!” I never expected to have so many conversations about cars and trucks and trains and buses. Yet, one of Jane’s favorite activities is to walk by the Arabella Street fire station to see if the truck is there. “Mommy, mommy, look! A red fire truck!!” she will explain. Our journey home from Ladder 5 takes us through the heart of the Uptown construction zone. While I’m navigating the stroller to avoid potholes and pits, Jane is mesmerized by the back hoes and dump trucks. “Wow-eee, look at that! Sooooo dirty,” she says. Yes, my daughter loves trucks, but she hates mud!

2013-2014 Touch-a-Truck LogoHer excitement for all things that move is just contagious! It is why I am so excited about the Junior League of New Orleans March 15th event Touch a Truck. At its new location, Zephyr Field Parking Lot, the event will provide children the chance to get an “up-close look at their favorite ‘big trucks’ and the opportunity to meet the people that protect, serve, and build Metropolitan New Orleans.” The event will be from 10:00am until 2:00pm that Saturday and is $8 per person in advance or $10 at the door (for guests one year old and up). A family can also purchase a family pack for $30 for five tickets.

What: 2nd Annual Touch a Truck Event

Where: Zephyr Field Parking Lot

When: Saturday, March 15 (10:00am – 2:00pm)

Cost: $8 in advance or $10 at the door

Touch a Truck 2Junior League of New Orleans’ commitment to the well being of our community’s children through education will be evident at this event, as its guests have the opportunity to participate in games and activities that promote safety and awareness. Adding to the festive atmosphere, Messina’s catering will be selling hot dogs, hamburgers, funnel cakes (my favorite), snow balls, pizza and hopefully juice boxes.

For every mom of a boy who spends his days imagining his life as a firefighter, and for every mom to a daughter who loves pink and tutus but also waving to buses and shouting “yuck” to back hoes, this event is for you! I, for one, cannot wait to see Jane perched atop a firetruck or exploring the inside of an ambulance. She will have a chance to step into these vehicles and, for a moment, into the shoes of the men and women who make them go vroom.

We are thrilled to also offer you the chance to win tickets for your own family! Enter below to win a set of five tickets for your family (valued at $30)!

  1. Omgoodness, I wouldn’t know where to start! Both my sons and daughter would love to see a bulldozer up close. I think they would be in awe of anything there. I can’t wait to see their faces when they get up to see each one.
