shopNOLA 2013: A Locally Sourced Holiday Gift Guide for New Orleans

If you’ve been following us from the beginning, chances are good that you remember shopNOLA 2012. Because we are passionate about connecting moms with local businesses and brands, last year we decided to compile a “favorite things” list for New Orleans area moms in advance of the holiday season. We figured that shopNOLA teaserit might give our readers some new ideas and also encourage local versus online shopping. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but there are so many ways to support the local New Orleans economy and small businesses during the holiday season! (Though if you’re out of town, please note that almost all of the vendors below would be glad to ship to you!)

Due to the overwhelming popularity of the post last year, we decided that we’d do it again. Some are brands we’ve worked with several times, and some will be new to you. We’ve purposely looked high and low across the city for unique businesses with fabulous customer service. In order to participate, New Orleans Moms Blog required all vendors to provide a product for us to review (if we were not already familiar from previous reviews/giveaways) because it is important to us that we have firsthand experience with companies and products before we recommend them to our readers. Vendors were also required to provide a product to give away. Businesses also paid a nominal fee to cover the time and resources it requires to effectively compile a post of this complexity, but all opinions expressed here are our own. And, we can assure you that every last one of these recommendations has the New Orleans Moms Blog “stamp of approval,” and we personally solicited all companies for inclusion.

So, without further adieu, we bring you shopNOLA 2013!

A family tradition we’ve started since having kids is an Advent calendar. It helps keep us focused on the meaning of Christmas. We do something or read or sing each day. I can’t wait to add more activities to the list as the boys get older and can more fully participate.

  51. magdalyn caserta November 4, 2013 at 4:39 pm #

  184. Lindsay November 8, 2013 at 7:26 pm #

Due 5-14-14! Go to stocking stuffer is a lottery ticket or gift card. Last time I had a girls night out was in September- too long! Favorite NOLA restaurant? WAY too many to pick just one, but right now I’d settle for anything that tastes like home!

  201. Alissa November 9, 2013 at 8:31 am #

  212. Becky M November 9, 2013 at 7:25 pm #

My favorite restaurant in NOLA is Ruby Slipper. My favorite family holiday tradition is that we stay home on Christmas day. We focus on our little family and just enjoy each other. My last girl’s night out was so long ago that I can’t even remember when it was! My favorite brand of children’s clothes is probably Gymboree. I have always been pleased with how well their clothes hold up and stay looking new. My go to stocking stuffer is candy! I think my biggest fashion challenge as a mom is trying to do more than a t-shirt & jeans everyday. The last piece of jewelry I bought for myself was an Origami Owl necklace. Out of all of the gift ideas you shared, I am most likely to buy another Origami Owl necklace. My mom has really been admiring mine. :-)

  213. Lisa Collins November 9, 2013 at 7:57 pm #

Our Christmas tradition, because we are so tired by this point…on Christmas Eve we just eat whatever we want for dinner (breakfast foods, candy, ice cream, whatever!) just to make it more fun and different. We were supposed to have Christmas Eve dinner once at our house, so we served everyone breakfast. They loved it!

    I can’t remember the last time I had a GNO….really…

  240. Amy Phillips November 10, 2013 at 10:31 am #

My absolute favorite family tradition is decorating the tree together. I’d have to say Carters is my favorite brand of children’s clothing because I have a lot of that brand. I usually shop at Kohls, Target, JC Penny, and various kids boutiques for my kiddos. My husband laughs at me for this, but my favorite ‘go to’ stocking stuffer is socks and underwear. I always got them in my stocking growing up and it seems like we’re always loosing socks. Plus they make a great space filler. I don’t typically splurge on myself, but the last piece of jewelry I got was my new wedding band. There were some awesome things on this list. I’d probably make a purchase from Sweet Olives Soap, Theodent, and Nola Tiles.

  241. Olivia November 10, 2013 at 10:39 am #

i love giving lottery tickets as stocking stuffers!
