Whit’s For Dinner – Review & Giveaway

It’s 5:15pm. The toddler is screaming about who knows what. You think you hear your cell phone but can’t find it under the pile of unopened mail and “artwork” from school on the kitchen table. Maybe it’s coming from the diaper bag you’ve yet to unpack. Oh shoot – that’s a sippy cup with milk from this morning in the diaper bag. Gross. Which reminds you that you forgot to buy more milk this afternoon. Le sigh. And now the dog is barking to go outside right.this.second. Wait, what were you doing? Oh yeah, looking for the cell phone in hopes that it was your husband calling to say he’s on his way home. Because the fact that there’s no milk for the toddler does not bode well for there being enough food in the house to constitute dinner. Sound familiar?

I was actually having a similar day not too long ago, and the irony is that Whiton Paine, owner of Whit’s For Dinner, meal delivery in New Orleans | New Orleans Moms Blogactually showed up in the midst of the chaos to witness it all. It was pretty much the perfect script for a review of a gourmet dinner delivery service: the house was a mess, the toddler was running all over the place, it was a three ring circus due to some overdue house projects and we quite literally had no milk in the house. Thankfully, Whit saved the day and prevented me from totally losing my mind!

Whit, who was raised in New Orleans, has a passion for cooking despite never being formally trained and shared with me that he had always dreamed of owning a restaurant. He just envisioned doing so later in life – perhaps during retirement – but life had different plans for him. After Katrina, the opportunity to purchase his favorite restaurant, Dick & Jenny’s, presented itself and he simply couldn’t pass it up. For five years he was a co-owner, cooking in the kitchen daily. After leaving Dick & Jenny’s in 2010 he spent some time considering his next move and – while not tending to his duties as a dad of two – dreamt up Whit’s For Dinner.

All of Whit’s food comes neatly labeled and ready to heat or serve (find out what’s on the menu each week by joining his mailing list). It took very little effort for me to throw a few items in the oven (or on the stove) while prepared meal service in New Orleans | New Orleans Moms Blog unloading the dishwasher and finally getting around to cleaning up our disaster of a kitchen. After 15-20 minutes, everything was heated and my husband and I sat down to what I would describe as restaurant quality food at home. Everything tasted extremely fresh, and the food was all very flavorful and satisfying. I honestly wouldn’t cook most of the recipes sampled (I am quite certain they take more effort than I usually spend on dinner!), so it was a total treat to enjoy Whit’s food because not only was it effortless but it was also different than what we’d usually eat. I don’t know about you but I don’t routinely whip up butternut squash soup and garnish it with toasted pumpkin seeds! Here’s what we tasted (he seriously spoiled us!):

  • Chicken Tikka Masala over basmati rice with peas, served with Indian spiced broccoli and cucumber rait
  • Chorizo and butternut soup, topped with roasted pumpkin seeds
  • Whit’s house salad
  • Classic meatloaf and garlic mashed potatoes, served with green beans
  • Chocolate chip cookies

And all of it was divine. My husband and I agreed that Whit is definitely going to become a regular part of our meal planning once baby girl arrives because the food was delicious and he couldn’t have made it easier for us. After receiving dinner made easy for busy moms in New Orleans | New Orleans Moms Blogthe menu each week, simply place an order online (Whit doesn’t have a minimum order amount, though he does ask that you buy at least one entree), and if you aren’t going to be home during his delivery window (Tuesdays and Thursdays between 3:00 and 6:00pm) then you can simply leave an ice chest on your porch for the food. Being a one man show means that Whit can be super flexible, so if you live outside of his delivery area or have a special request, just email (whitsfordinner {at} gmail {dot} com) or call (504-473-3886) – most likely he can help you out! And, if you’re looking for the perfect gift for new or expecting mothers, believe me when I say that anyone would appreciate a Whit’s For Dinner gift card.

We are so excited that two of you will win $25 gift cards to try Whit’s For Dinner! Whit currently concentrates on the greater New Orleans area, so please be sure that you live or work within the NOLA area (uptown, Garden District, CBD, Warehouse District, mid-city, Metairie, Lakeview, Algiers and English Turn) before entering.
